Stephensons Managing Director at No.10.
Stephensons Managing Director David Stephenson recently attended an afternoon reception at 10 Downing Street as a guest of the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. The event was organised by SaBRE (Supporting Britain's Reservists and Employers) to mark the contribution of employers of active Reservist members of the British Armed Forces, in conjunction with the 2009 Armed Forces Day celebrations taking place across the country. Stephensons of Easingwold Ltd currently employs Private Angus Ashworth as a part-time bus driver.
Angus, 25, has recently returned from his second tour of duty as a member of the TA, this time in Afghanistan where he served with a platoon from 4 Yorks that made up a Company under 7 Transport Regiment as part of Force Protection based at ISAF HQ, Kabul. His duties included base security, foot and vehicle patrols and escort duties, with one of the main threats being suicide bombers, something witnessed at close quarters by Angus on more than one occasion. David says "Angus is a highly valued and reliable member of our team, and we are pleased to once again welcome him back safely from his duties to re-assume his role with us. We at Stephensons believe that people in the TA like Angus deserve the full support of their employers and we are happy to do whatever we can to achieve this. We also believe that employers benefit from the training and experience that Reservists receive, developing initiative and a 'can-do' attitude in particular" David travelled with another member of the Stephensons team, driver John Ashworth who is also Angus' full-time employer and father.
The event was to thank employers for their role in providing flexible employment terms to Reservists, with guaranteed job security for them upon their return to civilian life. A thoroughly enjoyable and fascinating afternoon was enjoyed by David and John as part of the small contingent of Yorkshire employers, with other invited guests including General Sir Richard Dannatt, the Chief of the General Staff, Lord Mandelson, Ross Kemp and several members of the British Reservist Forces.
